California Grid is the largest field recording project I have undertaken to date. It involves mapping the entire state of California, in a grid of 70×70 mile squares, with hour-long ambient recordings. In total, the archive will come to 33 hours of recorded materials.
Outcomes will be:
- A 3 CD box set (each hour-length CD focussed on a specific region – NorCal, Central Cal, SoCal), including photographic and text documentation
- A 33 channel sound installation, together with various forms of visual documentation
The SoCal phase of this project, completed in March 2017, was presented at the Sound of Memory Symposium (Goldsmiths, London), and the San Diego Art Institute.
The Central Cal phase of this project was completed in February 2019.
The NorCal phase of this project will be completed in the summer of 2020 or 2021.
